Cleaning the Air in Ontario Canada

ODOUR CONTROL - MUNICIPAL LANDFILL ONTARIO, CANADA

Odours emitted from this landfill operation have been a source of complaints from local residents and surrounding outdoor recreational facilities for many years.

HydraLogic Systems Inc. was engaged to propose and implement a remedial odour control program to reduce odour complaints and associated health and safety issues posed to on-site personnel.

Previous attempts at diverting odorous gases away from the source of odour complaints with high powered fans and localized use of deodorizers were not effective.

THE APPROACH

HydraLogic installed an AirStremeTM automated misting to effectively treat malodours and reduce odour complaints at this facility. The system was designed to maximize contact of an odour neutralizer with malodorous gases by strategic positioning at critical point sources. The system was programmed to automatically mist a dilute solution of odour neutralizing product along a section of the property line during processing and peak hours of odour complaints.

SYSTEM APPLICATION

The AirStremeTM automated misting system designed for this facility was comprised of one controller/pump assembly and 61 misting nozzles strategically mounted along 1,400 feet of the perimeter debris fence separating the landfill from the neighbors. The controller was mounted in a storage shed and was programmed to activate the misting nozzles on an intermittent recycling timing sequence “On” 30 sec “Off” 5 min, starting at 6:00 am until 10:00 pm from Monday to Friday. Piian Odour Neutralizer, a concentrated natural odour control product was selected for use at this facility and was diluted 1:500 into the system’s large (500 gal) solution supply tank. At this setting the system utilizes approximately 13.75L of dilute solution per hour of operation.

CONCLUSION

The AirStremeTM automated misting system has been found to be a very effective and cost efficient means of reducing odour complaints associated with this landfill. The landfill manager is very satisfied with odour reduction performance of the AirStremeTM system. “I can tell the system is working and definitely helping with the odour problem. The smell of the mist coming out of the system is very pleasant” (landfill operator). He also added “the system is very effective and the number of complaints has been greatly reduced”. This is an ongoing HydraLogic AirStremeTM odour control program since installation in July 2002.
